This is the
sound track for every chapter of the novel. Each song relates to each
individual chapter and the meaning will be explained. The lyrics to each song
will also be provided as well as links to the songs themselves. I believe the
world view for this novel is a deist worldview. Janie talks about God and
references to the church in the novel. In the book Janie talks to Sam about
other women in the church. ““Yeah, Sam say most of em goes to church so they’ll be
sure to rise in judgment. Dat’s de day dat every secret is supposed to be
made known”. The twelve events of the novel are:
1.
The towns people gossiping about her
2.
TeaCakes death
3.
The hurricane
4.
Janies marriage to Joe
5.
TeaCake beating Janie
6.
TeaCakes bite wound
7.
Janie and Logan
8.
The towns people and TeaCake
9.
TeaCake stealing
10. Pheoby
bringing Janie food
11. Janie
kissing Johnny
12. Janie
and TeaCake leave for the Everglades
For number 1. I chose the song Biscuits by Kacey Musgraves
because it talks about minding your own business and not worrying about what
other people are doing and I thought it fit with this event since Janie has to
deal with all of the towns people constantly gossiping about her. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGIUtLO_x8g
#2. I chose the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Isreal
Kamakawiwo ‘Ole for TeaCakes death because it is a good song and it fits with
death but also because it has a relaxing and his death is somewhat relieving
since he wasn’t himself towards the end of his life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fahr069-fzE
#3. I chose the song Landslide by Fleetwood Mac because it
really resembles Janies life and her journey much like the hurricane. The song
also talks about building a life around a person life Janie did with TeaCake. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G10fjK9bUJk
#4. I chose the song Church Bells by Carrie Underwood
because it fits Janie and Joe’s marriage so perfectly. The song talks about a
marriage that started so good but then he beats her and then the husband dies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuLOHf32mzk
#5. I chose the song Jealous Guy by John Lennon because I
think it fits how TeaCake felt with Janie and the brother. In the song it talks
about not meaning to hurt you or make you cry and I feel like that’s almost
TeaCake talking to Janie telling her hes just a jealous guy.
#6. I chose the song Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw
because it fits TeaCake and how he knew he was dying or changing from the dog
bite.
#7. I chose the song Matchmaker from Fiddler on the Roof
since the marriage between Janie and Logan was set up through her grandmother.
And it’s a cute, funny song.
#8. I chose the song Little Town from Beauty and the Beast
just because it fits with all the people and everyone talking to everyone and
knowing everything.
#9. I chose the song God’s Gonna Cut You Down by Johnny
Cash. I chose this one because I feel like it fits with the scene of TeaCake
stealing Janies money and how she may have felt about the situation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Bwfm7-uNS4
#10. I chose the song Lean On Me by Bill Withers because it
fits Pheoby and Janie so perfectly. Janie and Pheoby are good friends and
Pheoby gave Janie food when she needed it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYI0AoXlOwE
#11. I chose the song Love Story by Taylor Swift because of
Janie and Johnny. They kissed and her grandmother saw it and then decided to
arrange a marriage for her.
#12. I chose the song Move by MercyMe because of Janie and
TeaCake moving to the everglades. I chose it because they are on a new journey
and I feel like the song really fits well with the event.
Lyrics:#1
Taking down your neighbor won't
take you any higher
I burned my own damn finger pokin'
someone else's fire
I've never gotten taller makin'
someone else feel small
If you ain't got nothin' nice to
say don't say nothin' at all
Just hoe your own row and raise
your own babies
Smoke your own smoke and grow your
own daisies
Mend your own fences and own your
own crazy
Mind your own biscuits and life
will be gravy
Mind your own biscuits and life
will be gravy
Nobody's perfect, we've all lost
and we've all lied
Most of us have cheated, the rest
of us have tried
The holiest of holies even slip
from time to time
We've all got dirty laundry hangin'
on the line
So hoe your own row and raise your
own babies
Smoke your own smoke and grow your
own daisies
Mend your own fences and own your
own crazy
Mind your own biscuits and life will
be gravy
Mind your own biscuits and life
will be gravy
Pourin' salt in my sugar won't make
yours any sweeter
Pissin' in my yard ain't gonna make
yours any greener
And I wouldn't know about the rocks
in your shoes
So I'll just do me and honey you
can just do you
So hoe your own row and raise your
own babies
Smoke your own smoke and grow your
own daisies
Mend your own fences and own your
own crazy
Mind your own biscuits and life
will be gravy
Mind your own biscuits and life
will be gravy

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
And the dreams that you dreamed of
Once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow
Blue birds fly
And the dreams that you dreamed of
Dreams really do come true ooh oh
Someday I'll wish upon a star
Wake up where the clouds are far
behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon
drops
High above the chimney top
That's where you'll find me
Oh, somewhere over the rainbow
bluebirds fly
And the dream that you dare to,
Oh why, oh why can't I?
Well I see trees of green and red
roses too,
I'll watch them bloom for me and
you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
Well I see skies of blue
And I see clouds of white
And the brightness of day
I like the dark
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow so pretty
in the sky
Are also on the faces of people
passing by
I see friends shaking hands
Singing, "How do you do?"
They're really singing, "I...I
love you."
I hear babies cry and I watch them
grow,
They'll learn much more than we'll
know
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world world
Someday I'll wish upon a star,
Wake up where the clouds are far
behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon
drops
High above the chimney top
That's where you'll find me
Oh, somewhere over the rainbow way
up high
And the dream that you dare to,
why, oh why can't I? I?

I took my love, took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned
around
And I saw my reflection in the
snow-covered hills
'Til the landslide brought me down
Oh, mirror in the sky, what is
love?
Can the child within my heart rise
above?
Can I sail through the changing
ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my
life?
Well, I've been afraid of changing
'Cause I've built my life around
you
But time made you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm getting older too
Well, I've been afraid of changing
'Cause I've built my life around
you
But time made you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm getting older too
Oh, I'm getting older too
I take my love, take it down
I climb a mountain and turn around
And if you see my reflection in the
snow-covered hills
Will the landslide bring you down?
And if you see my reflection in the
snow-covered hills
Will the landslide bring you down,
oh, oh?
The landslide bring you down

Jenny grew up wild, like a
blackfoot daisy
Out in the shack with a blue tick
hound
Broke as hell, but blessed with
beauty
The kind that a rich man can't turn
down
She caught the eye of an oil man
dancing
One summer night in a dime store
dress
She had the looks, he had the
mansion
And you can figure out the rest
It was all roses, dripping in
diamonds
Sipping on champagne
She was all uptown, wearing that
white gown
Taking his last name
She could hear those church bells
ringing, ringing
And up in the loft, that whole
choir singing, singing
Fold your hands and close your eyes
Yeah, it's all gonna be alright
And just listen to the church bells
ringing, ringing
Yeah, they're ringing
Jenny was hosting Junior League
parties
And having dinner at the country
club
Everyone thought they were Ken and
Barbie
But Ken was always getting way too
drunk
Saturday night, after a few too
many
He came home ready to fight
And all his money could never save
Jenny
From the devil living in his eyes
It was all bruises, covered in
makeup
Dark sunglasses
And that next morning, sitting in
the back pew
Praying with the baptist
She could hear those church bells
ringing, ringing
And up in the loft, that whole
choir singing, singing
Fold your hands and close your eyes
Yeah, it's all gonna be alright
You just listen to the church bells
ringing, ringing
Yeah, they're ringing
Jenny slipped something in his
Tennessee whiskey
No law man was ever gonna find
And how he died is still a mystery
But he hit a woman for the very
last time
She could hear those church bells
ringing, ringing
Standing there in a black dress
singing, singing
Fold your hands and close your eyes
Yeah, it's all gonna be alright
And just listen to the church bells
ringing, ringing
Yeah, they're ringing

was dreaming of the past
and my heart was beating fast
I began to lose control
I began to lose control
I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
Oh my I didn't want to hurt you
I'm just a jealous guy
I was feeling insecure
You might not love me anymore
I was shivering inside
I was shivering inside
Oh I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
Oh my I didn't want to hurt you
I'm just a jealous guy
[Whistling]
I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
Oh my I didn't want to hurt you
I'm just a jealous guy
I was trying to catch your eyes
I thought that you were trying to
hide
I was swallowing my pain
I was swallowing my pain
I didn't mean to hurt you
I'm sorry that I made you cry
Oh my I didn't want to hurt you
I'm just a jealous guy
watch out baby I'm just a jealous
guy
Look out baby I'm just a jealous
guy

He said I was in my early 40's,
With a lot of life before me,
And a moment came that stopped me
on a dime.
I spent most of the next days,
lookin' at the x-rays,
Talkin' 'bout the options and
talkin' 'bout sweet time.
Asked him when it sank in, that
this might really be the real end.
How's it hit ya, when you get that
kind of news.
Man what ya do.
And he says,
[Chorus]
I went sky divin',
I went rocky mountain climbin',
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull name
Fumanchu.
And I loved deeper,
And I spoke sweeter,
And I gave forgiveness I've been
denying,
And he said someday I hope you get
the chance,
To live like you were dyin'.
He said I was finally the husband,
That most the time I wasn't.
And I became a friend a friend
would like to have.
And all the sudden goin' fishing,
Wasn't such an imposition.
And I went three times that year I
lost my dad.
Well I finally read the good book,
And I took a good long hard look at
what I'd do
If I could do it all again.
And then.
[Chorus]
Like tomorrow was a gift and you've
got eternity
To think about what you do with it,
What could you do with it, what can
I do with with it, what would I do
with it.
[Chorus]
Sky divin',
I went rocky mountain climbin',
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull name
Fumanchu.
And I loved deeper,
And I spoke sweeter,
And I watched an eagle as it was
flyin'.
And he said someday I hope you get
the chance,
To live like you were dyin'.
To live like you were dyin'.
To live like you were dyin'.
To live like you were dyin'.
To live like you were dyin'.

Hodel:
Well, somebody has to arrange the matches,
Young people can't decide these things
themselves.
Chava:
She might bring someone wonderful----
Hodel:
Someone interesting----
Chava:
And well off----
Hodel:
And important---
Matchmaker, Matchmaker,
Make me a match,
Find me a find,
catch me a catch
Matchmaker, Matchmaker
Look through your book,
And make me a perfect match
Chava:
Matchmaker, Matchmaker,
I'll bring the veil,
You bring the groom,
Slender and pale.
Bring me a ring for I'm longing to be,
The envy of all I see.
Hodel:
For Papa,
Make him a scholar.
Chava:
For mama,
Make him rich as a king.
Chava and Hodel:
For me, well,
I wouldn't holler
If he were as handsome as anything.
Matchmaker, Matchmaker,
Make me a match,
Find me a find,
Catch me a catch,
Night after night in the dark I'm alone
So find me match,
Of my own.
(spoken)
Tzeitel:
Since when are you interested in a match,
Chava? I thought you had your eye on your books.
(Hodel chuckles)
Tzeitel con't:
And you have your eye on the Rabbi's son.
Hodel:
Well, why not?
We have only one Rabbi and he has only one
son.
Why shouldn't I want the best?
Tzeitel:
Because you're a girl from a poor family.
So whatever Yenta brings, you'll take,
right?
Of course right!
(throws scarf over her head, imitating
Yenta)
(singing)
Hodel, oh Hodel,
Have I made a match for you!
He's handsome, he's young!
Alright, he's 62.
But he's a nice man, a good catch, true?
True.
I promise you'll be happy,
And even if you're not,
There's more to life than that---
Don't ask me what.
Chava, I found him.
Won't you be a lucky bride!
He's handsome, he's tall,
That is from side to side.
But he's a nice man, a good catch, right?
Right.
You heard he has a temper.
He'll beat you every night,
But only when he's sober,
So you'll alright.
Did you think you'd get a prince?
Chava:
Well I'll find the best I can.
Hodel and Tzeitel:
With no dowry, no money, no family
background
Be glad you got a man!
Chava:
Matchmaker, Matchmaker,
You know that I'm
Still very young.
Please, take your time.
Hodel:
Up to this minute,
I misunderstood
That I could get stuck for good.
Chava and Hodel and Tzeitel:
Dear Yenta,
See that he's gentle
Remember,
You were also a bride.
It's not that
I'm sentimental
It's just that I'm terrified!
Matchmaker, Matchmaker,
Plan me no plans
I'm in no rush
Maybe I've learned
Playing with matches
A girl can get burned
So,
Bring me no ring
Groom me no groom
Find me no find
Catch me no catch
Unless he's a matchless match.

Belle:
Little
town, it's a quiet village
Every
day like the one before
Little
town full of little people
Waking
up to say...
Townsfolk:
Bonjour
Bonjour
Bonjour
Bonjour
Bonjour
Belle:
There
goes the baker with his tray, like always
The
same old bread and rolls to sell
Every
morning just the same
Since
the morning that we came
To
this poor provincial town
Townsfolk:
Good
morning, Belle
Belle:
good
morning monsieur
Townsfolk:
where
are you off to?
Belle:
the
bookshop, I just finished te most wonderful story
about
a beanstalk, and an ogar, and a---
townsfolk:
that's nice. MARIE the baguettes, hurry up
Townsfolk:
look,
there she goes
the
girl is strange, no question
dazed
and distracted, can't you tell?
never
part of any crowd
cause
her head's up on some cloud
no
denying she's a funny girl, that Belle
Man
1: bonjour
Woman
1: good day
Man
1: how is your family?
Woman
2: bonjour
Man
2: good day
Woman
2: how is your wife?
Woman
3: I need....six eggs
Man
3: that's too expensive!
Belle:
there must be more than this provincial life!
Man:
ah, Belle
Belle:
Good morning. I've come to return the book I borrowed
Man:

Belle:
oh I couldn't put it down. have ya got anythin' new?
Man:
(chuckle) not since yesterday
Belle:
that's alright. I'll borrowww, this one
Man:
that one? but you've read it twice!
Belle:

daring
sword fights, magic spells, a prince in disguise!
Man:
if you like it all that much it's yours!
Belle:
but sir?!?
Man:
I insist!
Belle:
well thank you, thank you very much!
Townsfolk:
look,
there she goes, that girl is so peculiar
I
wonder if she's feeling well
with
a dreamy, far-off look
and
her nose stuck in a book
what
a puzzle to the rest of us is Belle
Belle:
ohhhhhh....isn't
this amazing?
it's
my favorite part because....you'll see
here's
where she meets Prince Charming
but
she won't discover that it's him
till
chapter three
Woman:
now
it's no wonder that her name
means
"beauty"
her
looks have got no parallel
Shopkeeper:
but
behind that fair facade
I'm
afraid she's rather odd
very
different from the rest of us
Townsfolk:
she's
nothing like the rest of us
yes,
different from the rest of us is Belle
Lefou:
wow you didn't miss a shot gaston!
you're
the greatest hunter in the whole world!
Gaston:I
know
Lefou:
no beast alive stands a chance against you, haha...and
no
girl for that matter
Gaston:
it's true lefou, and I've got my sight set on that one
Lefou:
t-the inventor's daughter!?
Gaston:
she's the one, the lucky girl I'm going to marry
Lefou:
but she's--
Gaston:
the most beautiful girl in town
Lefou:
I know--
Gaston:
that makes her the best! and don't I derseve the best?
Lefou:
well of couse, I mean ya do, but I (mumbling)
Gaston:
right from the moment when I met her, saw her
I
said she's gorgeous and I fell
here
in town it's only she
who's
as beautiful as me
so
I'm making plans to woo and marry Belle
Silly
Girls:
look
there he goes! isn't he dreamy?
monsieur
Gaston! oh,he's so cute!
be
still my heart! I'm hardly breathing!
he's
such a tall, dark, strong, and hansome brute!
Man1:bonjour
Gaston:pardon!
Man2:good
day
Man3:mais

Matron:you

Woman1:what

Woman1:this

Man5:those

Woman1:...it's

Man5:...they

Baker:
madame's mistaken!
Belle:
there must be more than this provincial life!
Gaston:
just watch....I'm going to make Belle my wife!
Townsfolk:
look
there she goes....a girl who's strange but special
a
most peculiar mademoiselle
it's
a pity and a sin
she
doesn't quite fit in
cause
she really is a funny girl
a
beauty but a funny girl
she
really is a funny girl.....that Belle!!

You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the
back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em
down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em
down
Well my goodness gracious let me
tell you the news
My head's been wet with the
midnight dew
I've been down on bended knee
talkin' to the man from Galilee
He spoke to me in the voice so
sweet
I thought I heard the shuffle of
the angel's feet
He called my name and my heart
stood still
When he said, "John go do My
will!"
Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the
back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em
down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em
down
You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Well you may throw your rock and
hide your hand
Workin' in the dark against your
fellow man
But as sure as God made black and
white
What's done in the dark will be
brought to the light
You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the
back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you
down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you
down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you
down

Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain, we all have
sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always
tomorrow
Lean on me when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend, I'll help
you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to
lean on
Please, swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your
needs
That you won't let show
You just call on me, brother, when
you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that
you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
Lean on me when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend, I'll help
you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to
lean on
You just call on me, brother, when
you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that
you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
If there is a load
You have to bear that you can't
carry
I'm right up the road, I'll share
your load
If you just call me
Call me (If you need a friend)
Call me (Call me uh-huh)
Call me (When you need a friend)
Call me (If you ever need a friend)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (If you need a friend)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me

We were both young when I first saw
you.
I close my eyes and the flashback
starts:
I'm standing there on a balcony in
summer air.
See the lights, see the party, the
ball gowns.
See you make your way through the
crowd
And say, "Hello, "
Little did I know...
That you were Romeo, you were
throwing pebbles,
And my daddy said, "Stay away
from Juliet"
And I was crying on the staircase
Begging you, "Please don't
go"
And I said...
Romeo, take me somewhere we can be
alone.
I'll be waiting; all that's left to
do is run.
You'll be the prince and I'll be
the princess,
It's a love story, baby, just say,
"Yes".
So I sneak out to the garden to see
you.
We keep quiet 'cause we're dead if
they knew
So close your eyes... escape this
town for a little while.
Oh, oh.
'Cause you were Romeo - I was a
scarlet letter,
And my daddy said, "Stay away
from Juliet"
But you were everything to me,
I was begging you, "Please
don't go"
And I said...
Romeo, take me somewhere we can be
alone.
I'll be waiting; all that's left to
do is run.
You'll be the prince and I'll be
the princess.
It's a love story, baby, just say,
"Yes".
Romeo, save me, they're trying to
tell me how to feel.
This love is difficult but it's
real.
Don't be afraid, we'll make it out
of this mess.
It's a love story, baby, just say,
"Yes".
Oh, oh, oh.
I got tired of waiting
Wondering if you were ever coming
around.
My faith in you was fading
When I met you on the outskirts of
town.
And I said...
Romeo, save me, I've been feeling
so alone.
I keep waiting for you but you
never come.
Is this in my head? I don't know
what to think.
He knelt to the ground and pulled
out a ring and said...
Marry me, Juliet, you'll never have
to be alone.
I love you, and that's all I really
know.
I talked to your dad - go pick out
a white dress
It's a love story, baby, just say,
"Yes".
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
'Cause we were both young when I
first saw you

I'm not about to give up
Because I heard you say
There's gonna be brighter days
There's gonna be brighter days
I won't stop, I'll keep my head up
No, I'm not here to stay
There's gonna be brighter days
There's gonna be brighter days
I just might bend but I won't break
As long as I can see your face
[Chorus:]
When life won't play along
And right keeps going wrong
And I can't seem to find my way
I know where I am found
So I won't let it drag me down
Oh, I'll keep dancing anyway
I'm gonna move (move)
I'm gonna move (move)
I'm gonna move
I've got to hold it steady
Keep my head in the game
Everything is about to change
Everything is about to change
This hurt is getting heavy
But I'm not about to cave
Everything's about to change
There's gonna be brighter days
I just might bend but won't break
As long as I can see your face
[Chorus]
No matter what may come
Gotta move to a different drum
No matter what life brings
Gotta move gotta move to a
different beat [x2]
I just might bend but won't break
As long as I can see your face
[Chorus x2]
No matter what may come
Gotta move to a different drum
No matter what life brings
Gotta move gotta move to a
different beat
